The patient will usually be asked to lie down or sit during a session. A patient should always be aware of what they wear to an acupuncture session as the acupuncturist may ask you to roll up or remove layers of clothing in order to place these needles in certain areas of your body. The basis behind acupuncture is that the healthy functioning of the body is controlled through a system of channels under the skin by the flow of “qi” (pronounced “chee”). When qi flow is blocked or weakened, it can lead to pain, illness or other conditions occurring within the body.

During the sessions, patients may feel a dull ache or a tingling sensation during needle insertion but should not experience any large amount of pain. If a patient does, the acupuncturist should be made aware of it right away. Once the session is complete, the needles are removed and disposed of accordingly. Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation will provide an assessment of a patient’s general health, perform a physical examination and ask about the patient’s medical history. The acupuncturist at our Midtown West NYC clinic will insert sterilized acupuncture needles along the body’s different acupuncture points based on the patient’s condition.

The insertion of thin acupuncture needles into specific body points moves the energy and blood again. Neuro-functional acupuncture is a specialized technique that I have been trained in. Neuro-functional acupuncture targets regular acupuncture points that overlap with trigger points and nerve motor points. Electrical stimulation of these areas produce neurotransmitters, endorphins, enkephalins, and endocannabinoids to lower pain and perfuse blood.

An added bonus of unique therapeutic program treatments is that they provide relief from chronic pain without the unhealthy side effects that are common with most prescription medications. Pain Relief – Acupuncture has been used to lower pain for thousands of years. The traditional theory of acupuncture is that it moves both qi and blood.

Moxibustion uses a natural herb called moxa, also known as mugwort , which practitioners burn either indirectly or directly on a patient’s skin to stimulate the acupuncture meridians beneath. Acupuncture is a complete medical protocol dated more than 2,500 years ago, focusing on correcting imbalances of energy in the body. Once a needle is inserted, sensory neurons are stimulated affecting the connective tissue. Signals then travel to the brain and spinal cord, affecting the Central & Peripheral Nervous Systems. From there, a cascade of signals are activated, stimulating the release of neurotransmitters and hormones which have a systemic affect to regulate the Endocrine, Immune, Cardiovascular and Digestive Systems. Acupuncture is one of the oldest medical treatment therapies in history. The earliest recorded manuscripts and evidence of acupuncture meridians originated in China and dates back to more than 2,500 years ago.
